about

Renaïssance Supersonic Carrier is the debut solo album of Johan Östman, under the artistic moniker of Ano Ton. Reflecting on the ambivalences of supersonic flight, this is a work of grinding turbulence, contorted circadian rhythms and sublime altitudes. A machinic roar from the depths of an engine, each track is held together with an endlessly rising tone, lifting like heat from the asphalt. Renaïssance Supersonic Carrier sonically points to the anachronisms, anxieties and transformative power of near-atmospheric travel, where space and time fall out of joint.

This interdisciplinary project is an album of digital music accompanied by a printed edition, including two essays written by Johan Östman and composer and writer Emile Frankel. Both essays refer to a particular moment in time — naive when considered today — during which inexhaustible technological advances and ultrasonic speed were the horizon of the future. This modernist fantasy is also visually referenced in the printed publication, designed by Marijn Degenaar. Renaïssance Supersonic Carrier brings these sonic, visual and written elements together as a single multimedia work. In another iteration of this project, Renaïssance Supersonic Carrier takes form as a live performance for both sound and light.

Johan Östman is a curator and musician active mainly in the fields of experimental and electronic music. Although working internationally, Berlin has been his main place of residence for eight years. He is the artistic director of Swedish experimental music festival Norbergfestival.

Renaïssance Supersonic Carrier marks the solo debut for Johan Östman/Ano Ton. Other releases include a collaborative album with fellow Swedish electronic musician Varg2tm (Entropic Dances, 2019), and solo contributions to compilation albums with Scandinavian labels Northern Electronics: Scandinavian Swords IIII: Atlas of Visions Pt. II, 2020; and Janushoved: The Moon Draws The Ravenous Sea, 2020.
